Damage items need a benchmark
Life Orb boosts damaging attacks and costs the holder recoil. Muscle Band and Wise Glasses offer smaller, consistent boosts; Expert Belt only helps on super-effective hits. None is automatically best. Pick one because it reaches a calculated knockout or because its consistency fits the role.
Remember the Mega-slot rule: a Pokémon holding a Mega Stone cannot also hold one of these items. Place the damage item on a non-Mega teammate, then check whether the whole pair improves.
Accuracy and field-duration tools
Wide Lens improves accuracy across a set; Zoom Lens only applies when its holder moves after the target. Weather rocks normally extend weather created by the holder's weather move, so confirm the source of the weather before assuming an automatic-weather ability is extended. Light Clay is valuable on screen teams only if the setter can reliably establish screens.
Niche utility is still utility
Iron Ball grounds and slows its holder. Metronome rewards repeating the same move. Shed Shell and Big Root solve narrower problems. Their strength is specificity, not raw power: use them when you can name the interaction they are meant to answer.
Run the full calculation
Do not estimate an important damage benchmark by multiplying a previous result. Targeting, spread modifiers, STAB, weather, screens, abilities, type effectiveness, rounding and the damage range all contribute. Use the calculator, record the relevant range, then decide whether the item is worth the slot.
A short selection checklist
- What specific turn does this item improve?
- What reliable item am I giving up?
- Does the item still work when my preferred field condition is absent?
- Can I explain its purpose to another player in one sentence?
